Blueberries and Heaven

I have a problem. A big problem.

I realized it as I was eating blueberries this morning.

My problem, like most Americans, is that I like blueberry flavoring better than the blueberry itself.

Preferring the synthetic over the real thing is the problem.

Other things we prefer over the real thing (I'm including you so I won't feel all alone)...

Jiffy over real Peanut Butter
Bartles & James over a Chardonnay
Fruity Pebbles over Oatmeal (which I blogged about: click here)
Hershey's over Baker's (click here...who said Switzerland had the best chocolate?)
Velveeta over Cheddar
Aunt Jamima's over Maple Syrup
Eggos over Hearty Oatmeal Pancakes (click here)
McDonalds over Farmer's Market
White over Whole wheat
Fruit snacks over Fruit
And the list goes on...

What is the reason for replacing the real with the synthetic?

Corn syrup is more addicting than the actual sugars in the fruit. And corn syrup is in EVERYTHING. Fruit is good on top of the dessert, but can never be considered the dessert itself. That's my problem. I wish for the day when the strawberry looks better than the cream and cake on which it sat.

Will my taste be more refined when I get to heaven?

Isaiah 25:6 even describes the food and beverages in heaven as "rich food" and "aged wine."

For all the non-drinkers out there, you'll have plenty of time to develop your palate.

For all the fruity pebbles eaters, we can only hope. Maybe Fruity Pebbles will be considered a "rich food."

One of the reason the church has trafficked in rules, dicta & drawing lines is that people demand such things. We like manageable religion and spirituality to real relationship to God. You can see it in their eyes - you are sharing about God's vision for all you have being His, being free from greed ("just tell us how much we need to give"). Trying to share a theology of the body, of beauty, of God's vision for sexuality in the imago dei ("so how far can we go anyway?"). God, give us the grace to develop a palate for what's real, raw, authentic, unprocessed & untamed!

In Jonathan Edwards "Treatise Concerning Religious Affections" he describes what he calls 12 distinguishing signs. He claims that God gives the elect a new foundation for all of our faculties. I hope that if Brussels Sprouts are "rich food" he gives me the faculties, otherwise I'll be famished...

And I hope that by aged wine he means Guinness. But then again, maybe I'm reprobate...

Thanks Mark, I've already been dwelling on Philippians 3:19 this week:

"Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things."

I actually despise blueberry flavoring as well as cherry, but I love the fruit.
I would take real peanut butter but Jiffy is cheaper.
They still make Bartles & James?
Velveeta is horrendous.
I got your back on Aunt Jamima though.

Did you let Leatha see this post?

I'm with ya on the blueberries. I one time made blueberry muffins with real blueberries in home-ec class. The whole muffin turned blue, looked like a smurf. Not good.
