Colors of fall
One of the advantages of going green (i.e. chemical free lawn) is that you get voluntary prairie grass in your yard every year. And in the fall, it turns this cool brown color. 
That's the optimist's way of looking at weeds.

That's my approach. Chemicals and lots of them.
Hey, you're in Ames. Maybe you could get the ag department to do some sort of study on your lawn.
